Recently, I started a devotional called, “Christian is who I am and athlete is what I do”.
This devotional has changed the way I think about being an artist (for the better). In the first entry, the author writes about how they are an “athletic Christian,” rather than a “Christian athlete”. I thought that this was interesting since I would think putting “Christian” first in the title would make it your primary identity, but it’s actually the other way around. So, I am an “artistic Christian,” rather than a “Christian artist,” which I believe makes more sense for me.
When your identity is rooted in Jesus, competition with others doesn’t matter as much. Since we are all beloved children of God, I feel like some of the pressure to perform perfectly and keep up with the Joneses is taken off. A practical step I always do before or during my art practice is praying and thanking God for the gifts and talents that He’s given me. It may seem strange, but I believe it equips me with the strength to continue on in what I’m doing, as well as defining my purpose in this world.
Relevant scripture:
Ephesians 2:10 “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
